Putin Proposes Bilateral Meeting with Modi at BRICS Summit in Kazan Next Month

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, scheduled for October 22-24. The proposal came during a meeting between Putin and India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, held on Thursday at the Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg.

During their interaction, Putin expressed satisfaction with the development of the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between India and Russia. He emphasized the importance of security issues in the bilateral relationship and thanked India for maintaining an active dialogue on this front.

“We will be expecting Mr. Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting there on October 22 to review the results of our joint work and implement agreements reached during his visit to Moscow, while outlining plans for the near future,” Putin was quoted by the Kremlin.

NSA Ajit Doval conveyed Prime Minister Modi's gratitude and informed the Russian President of Modi’s willingness to share insights from his recent visit to Ukraine. Modi visited Kyiv on August 23, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urging both Russia and Ukraine to engage in direct discussions to end the ongoing war. Modi also reiterated India's readiness to play an active role in restoring peace in the region.

The Putin-Doval meeting comes two months after Modi's visit to Moscow, where key bilateral agreements were discussed. This latest engagement also coincides with Doval’s participation in a BRICS National Security Advisors' conclave, which is currently taking place in St. Petersburg.

Earlier, on Wednesday, NSA Doval held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, where the two sides reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and discussed issues of mutual interest. The upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan is expected to further strengthen multilateral ties between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Modi is likely to attend the summit in person.
